Abstract

Introductory handbooks pay relatively little attention to the space of time between the emperors Louis II and Berengar I. Yet their rules were significantly different from those of Charlemagne, Louis the Pious, and Lothar I, as well as from that of Otto the Great, and thus they are a considered a separate period in the history of the Empire. When considering the reciprocal relationship and mutual influences among the papacy, the Kingdom of Italy, and the Empire, the following developments can be discerned. The papacy established itself as the sole authority of legitimacy, accruing to itself influence over the choice and review of imperial candidates; they key event here was the death of Louis II without male offspring. This model enjoyed great longevity, as did the selection of Rome as the place of coronation. In addition, the Kingdom of Italy and the Empire remained two distinct entities, each with a different and varying relation to the other. The papacy also sought to assert its authority here, namely over the choice of who received the Kingdom of Italy. Only the reign of Otto the Great effected a change in the connection between the Empire and the Kingdom of Italy.
